Earth Day: Sustainability in Coworking Spaces

To mark Earth Day this year, we’re exploring the growing role of coworking spaces in championing sustainable office practices. Let's explore some of the key areas where this positive impact is being felt.

The Sustainable Coworking Advantage

Space and Material Waste:

Traditional office spaces, operating per-company, lead to resource duplication and material waste, particularly in paper usage with individual printers and filing systems. Coworking spaces, however, foster shared resources and digital efficiency. By using communal printers, digital platforms, and collaborative software, The View significantly reduces paper consumption. Additionally, centralised management of electronic equipment helps to minimise e-waste, which is a growing challenge in traditional setups.

Energy Efficiency:

Energy consumption is a critical factor in office sustainability. Unlike traditional offices with potentially uncontrolled lighting and AC systems operating outside of business hours, many coworking spaces integrate smart technologies. Motion sensors and programmable thermostats optimise energy consumption by adjusting to actual usage, reducing the overall space requiring constant temperature control.

Our Commitment

#zerotolandfill

A cornerstone of our efforts is our #zerotolandfill project, where we are dedicated to significantly reducing the waste we send to landfills.  A key partner in our #zerotolandfill journey has been Amy Irwin from Conscious Kitchens. By working closely with Conscious Kitchens, we've gained valuable insights and practical strategies. This includes a move away from general waste bins towards comprehensive composting and recycling systems. Amy's guidance has optimised our bin infrastructure and educated our members on best practices, leading to a significant reduction in landfill-bound waste.

Deposit Return Scheme

We've also recently added a new bin in our social area for the Deposit Return Scheme. All proceeds from this initiative will be donated to national charities, as part of our ongoing commitment to community support.

Planning for The Future

The View is deeply invested in building a sustainable workspace. Collaborating with Conscious Kitchens, we actively support our members' well-being by fostering a positive and environmentally conscious workspace. We believe that by embracing new ideas and working together, we can create an even more responsible and thriving community. We're excited about the future and the opportunities to further integrate sustainability into the heart of The View.
