Supporting your team during the summer months: A guide for employers

At The View, we get that summer calls for a different approach. Whether you’re in a private office or a co-working space, this guide will help you support your team and keep things running smoothly all season long.

Acknowledge the shift into summer

As summer arrives, many workplaces often see a dip in energy and focus. Longer days, warm weather and upcoming holidays naturally lead to more distractions and time off, making it harder to stay motivated.

Summer means holidays, family time and outdoor fun, all of which can pull employees’ attention away from work. Instead of fighting this seasonal shift, employers can adapt their leadership and policies to better support their teams during this period.

Offer more flexibility

Flexibility is especially important during the summer months. Consider encouraging or expanding work from home or even work from anywhere policies. This added freedom helps employees better balance their personal and professional commitments. It’s also important to provide flexibility for remote team members, such as offering hot desking options close to where they’re located.

Embrace Summer Fridays

Shorter workdays or half days on Fridays are a great way to boost morale and give your team a chance to recharge. Offering Summer Fridays is a simple way to maintain a positive work environment and give your team time to unwind.

Support Family and Life Balance

With kids out of school and families spending more time together, it’s essential to prioritise policies that support this balance. Flexible schedules or adjustable hours can make a significant difference in helping employees manage both work and home responsibilities.

Prioritise employee's wellbeing

Summer is the perfect time to remind your team to take advantage of their holiday allowance. Time away from work is vital for mental health, helping employees return more focused, energised and productive. Check out our Out of Office Guide from last summer!

Regular check ins are just as important. Use them to stay connected, gauge workload and identify any signs of stress early before they become bigger issues.

You might also consider job sharing, where two employees split the responsibilities of one role. This not only eases individual workloads but also makes it easier for team members to take time off without disruption. It’s a great way to promote flexibility and collaboration during the summer months.

Keep team morale high

Maintaining morale is essential during the summer months. Take time to celebrate wins, big or small, to keep energy levels up and show appreciation for your team’s efforts. Publicly celebrating achievements and fostering a culture of peer appreciation can significantly boost team motivation.

Building social connections is equally important. Organise team events, whether in person or virtual, to help your team stay engaged and feel valued.

Summer brings a natural shift in pace, and adapting your leadership style to meet the season can make a meaningful difference. By offering flexibility, prioritising wellbeing and keeping morale high, you help your team stay focused, motivated and supported whether they’re working from home, a private office, or a co-working space like The View.

When employees feel genuinely cared for, they’re more engaged, productive and loyal.  Supporting your team through this season is not only good for their wellbeing, it’s a smart investment in your company’s long-term success!
